It is no longer news that the 2019 presidential election which was scheduled to hold on Feb 16th was postponed to Feb 23rd by the Inec chairman few hours to its commencement. However, the fate of corp members /adhoc staff is still unknown due to the treatments they received concerning their welfare at their various polling units. Speculations has been ongoing that no positive measures has been done/put in place concerning the welfare of the corp members on the rescheduled date.
In an interview with News24extra, some corp members expressed the suffering they went through at their various wards the very night before the election was postponed.
According to a corp member who happen’s to be an ADHOCStaff/NYSC (APO/VP) for the election, name withheld said that INEC will pay them the sum of 35,000 after the election, and will also pay 7,500 for training and feeding, which happens to be 4,500 for Training and 3,000 for feeding.
He also said that he was given his 3,000 in the morning after the election was cancelled, and he also said that INEC didn’t make provision of accommodation and security wasn’t in anyway provided either. He went further to state that they spent the night in busses and some slept on the floor outside and inside classrooms. He also said he hopes that it is better this time as promises have been made by the INEC chairman in his recent broadcast.
Another corp member who was also interviewed, name withheld also said:
‘I am just partaking in this to have a story to tell my children that wen I was serving so so thing happen…(litter mood) but really we die here oooh…. Shebi money go sha come out sha’
Also stated by another corp member.name withheld, she said:
‘I am so confused o. Internet is saying something else INEC staffs are saying another thing and the whole thing is just confusing. We slept in a bus the other time we are hoping to do the same this time too’.
Below are pictures of the ‘ill treated’ corp members
Other corp members also stated that they are actually partaking in this because the monthly allowance(#19 800) stipulated for corp members is really too small and they are doing this because they need to help themselves with the funds. while some are doing it because of the love for the country by stating;
“we die here”.
The above reactions has made it so obvious that these corp members aren’t happy about the situation of things imposed on them by the Federal Government/INEC. But thank God things has actually been brought to limelight in the meeting held with the management of NYSC and INEC.
The meeting was held as regards the harsh experience of corp members recruited as ad-hoc staff for the botched February 16 polls reaching the conclusion of improving the safety and providing welfare(accommodation, tight security especially at the Registration Area Centres (RACs) throughout the period of the elections, transportation).
INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stated on the 21st of February in Abuja while addressing stakeholders in his third briefing that;
‘Each corp member was entitled to N4,500 training allowance, including transport (N1,000) and refreshment (N500), for the three-day training period’.
He also said;
“For deployment on election duty, they are entitled to transport, feeding and an honorarium of N9, 000 and N4, 000 making it N13, 000 each. For the presidential election, N17, 500 is expected to be paid separately to each member. Since no training will be conducted for the second election, he said that each corps member will receive N13, 000, making a total of N30, 500. That is the Standard allowance for corp members.”
With the above statement by the INEC chairman, the mindset of corp members would be settled on the amount to expect after the exercise.
Also as at the time of reporting the collated interviews from corp members, nothing was done as regards the promises of providing welfare (good accommodations). Corp members still get to sleep in coaster buses, some on the floor, inside and outside classrooms.
